Elijah? Evan? Eduardo? Elvis? Here are some popular and uncommon baby boy names that start with the letter E.

Looking for a baby boy name that starts with E? According to the U.S. Social Security Baby Name Index, the hottest E names Ethan and Elijah-- two biblical names that weren't used very widely until recently. Old-fashioned favorites such as Edward also are highly ranked. Here are some popular and unusual baby names that begin with the letter E.

Popular & Trendy Baby Boy Names That Start With E

  • Ethan. Old Testament boys' names are in style, and Ethan is hot, hot, hot. Not used very commonly until the 1990s, Ethan ranked at #4 in 2006. Ethan comes from a Hebrew name that means "constancy.'
  • Elijah. Like Ethan, Elijah was pretty obscure until the 1990s, and in 2006 it ranked at #29. If you're Jewish, this would be a great name to use for a baby born during Passover. Elijah comes from a Hebrew name meaning "God is Lord." Eli was also ranked fairly high at #131, as was Elias at #186. If you're looking for a less popular version of this name, try Elliott.
  • Evan. Evan's been popular a little longer than Ethan, and it's currently ranked at #42. Evan is from an English name that means "youth."
  • Eric. Eric was a bigger star in the 1970s, but it's hanging in there at #77. Alternate spellings Erik and Erick are moderately popular as well. Eric is probably the most widely used Scandinavian name in the United States. In Old Norse, it means "complete ruler."
  • Emmanuel. Although Emmanuel was only ranked #166 in 2006, Emmanuel is climbing the charts quickly, and may eventually join Ethan and Elijah as a newly trendy Biblical name. In the meantime, it's a less common alternative to these two more trendy choices. Emmanuel is from a Hebrew name that means "God is with us."
  • Edward, Edwin, & Edgar. Although none of these names are trendy, all are more popular than you'd might imagine-- respectively ranked at #143, #158, and #171 in 2006. The Spanish Eduardo is also a popular choice. Edmund, however, is hardly ever used. These names have Old English and Germanic origins, and their meanings are all related to the concept of wealth.

Unusual Baby Boy names That Start With E

  • Ezra & Ezekiel. Here are two much less popular Biblical alternative to trendy names like Elijah and Ethan. Ezra comes from a Hebrew name that means "assistance." Ezekiel comes from a Hebrew name that means "God strengthens."
  • Enrique & Emilio. These Spanish names haven't caught on as much as Eduardo, but maybe they will. They have similar meanings. Enrique comes from an Ancient Germanic name that means "home leader." Emilio comes from a Latin name that means "leader."
  • Elvis & Elton. Names that are heavily associated with one person often aren't very popular, and these two rock-and-roll names are no exception. Elton is probably derived from the same origins as Elijah, but Elvis' origins are unknown.
  • Earl, Eugene, & Ernest. Are these names hopelessly outdated, or retro-chic? You decide. Both names have regal meanings. Earl comes from an Old English name that means "nobleman," and Eugene comes from a Greek name that means "aristocrat." Ernest is from a Germanic name that means "fight to the finish." For a fairly uncommon Spanish choice, try Ernesto.
