From Isaac to Isadore, here are some trendy and uncommon baby boy names that start with the letter I.

When it comes to baby boy names, there just aren't that many that begin with the letter I. According to the U.S. Social Security Baby Name Index, only three male names that begin with I were ranked in the top 100 name list for 2006. If you look beyond the most popular names, however, you'll find some quirky and unique choices.

Here are some trendy and unusual baby boy names that begin with the letter I

Popular & Trendy Baby Boy Names That Start With I

  • Isaiah. Until a few years ago, Isaiah was a very uncommon name. However, in 2006, it was the highest rank letter I name at a respectable #40-- and climbing fast. Isaiah comes from a Hebrew name that means "God is my helper." A less common variation is Isaias.
  • Isaac. Fairly popular as a Jewish name for years, Isaac has crossed over into trendiness, and ranked at #48 in 2006. Although it sounds like Isaiah, this classic Old Testament name is not related. Isaac is from a Hebrew name that means "he will laugh."
  • Ian. This Gaelic form of John was ranked at #81 in 2006. Like John, it comes from a Hebrew name meaning "God's grace."
  • Ivan. Ivan is slowly climbing the popularity lists, and ranked at #127 in 2006. Used commonly in Russia and Slavic cultures, Ivan is also a form of John.

Unusual Baby Boy Names That Start With I

  • Ira. Rarely used in the U.S. these days, this short and quirky Hebrew name could make a nice alternative to Isaac and Isaiah. Ira comes from a Hebrew expression that means "alert."
  • Ishmael. Also rarely used in the U.S., Ishmael is a Hebrew name that means "God hears." The name has strong significance in Islam.
  • Irving & Irvin. Are these names way too dated, our are they retro chic? You decide, but regardless, they're rarely used these days. Syndicated comic strip fans know Irving as Cathy's husband. A similarly less-than-fashionable I name is Irwin, which is an Old English name that means "boar friend."
  • Isadore. With the popularity of Isabella, we just might see a resurgence of Isadora and Isadore. The name comes from the Greek and means "gift from Isis."
  • Israel. Of religious significance for three different religions, this place name ranked fairly highly in 2006, at #203. The name Israel comes from a Hebrew name that means "struggles with God."
