Sean? Sebastian? Soren? Check out these common and uncommon names for little boys that start with the letter S.

Looking for a baby boy's name that starts with the letter S? Although baby girls names that start with S are plentiful and trendy, S is not nearly as popular for boys. With help from the U.S. Social Security Baby Name Index, here's a collection of popular and unusual baby boy names that begin with S.

Popular & Trendy Baby Boy Names That Start With S

  • Samuel. Ranked at #25 in 2006, Samuel is the most popular S boy's name in the United States. This parallels the popularity of Samantha, which was #10 on the girl's list. Samuel comes from a Hebrew name that means "God heard."
  • Sean/Shawn. Although not as popular as it was in the 1970s and 1980s, this classic Irish name is still widely used in America. In 2006, Sean ranked at #68, while Shawn ranked at #169. This name is actually a form of John, which means "God's grace." A popular related name is Shane, which ranked at #179 in 2006.
  • Sebastian. This artsy name has risen from obscurity, and was ranked at #76 in 2006. Sebastian comes from a Greek name that means "revered."
  • Steven/Stephen. A top 20 name from the Baby Boom through the 1970s, Steven is finally falling, and ranked at #90 in 2006. Alternate spelling Stephen ranked at #165. The name of a New Testament martyr, Steven comes from a Greek name that means "crown" or "garland."
  • Seth. Biblical names are hot, so it's surprising Seth hasn't caught on more. Seth ranked at #103 in 2006. The name comes from a Hebrew expression that means "appointed."
  • Spencer. At #182, Spencer's never been wildly popular - so if you're looking for a last-name-turned-first-name that isn't too trendy, give Spencer a try. Spencer comes from an English name that means "dispenser of provisions."
  • Skyler/Skyler/Schuyler. Although more popular in the U.S. as a girl's name, this name is starting to be used more widely for boys as well. Skyler is the most popular masculine spelling. The name is Dutch in origin, and means "scholar" or "protection."

Unusual Baby Boy Names That Start With S

  • Sawyer. Thanks to Tom Sawyer, this last-name-turned-first-name has an all-American feel, but it isn't used much. The meaning of sawyer is simply "one who saws wood."
  • Silas. This old-fashioned name is becoming a bit more common, so perhaps it will be trendy one day. Silas comes from a Greek name that means "wood."
  • Sterling. Strong and unique, or way too pretentious? You decide. Sterling comes from an English expression that means "the shining of metal."
  • Santos. If you're looking for a Spanish name that isn't popular, try Santos. The name comes from a Spanish expression that means "the saints."
  • Soren. Soren originates from a Latin name (which means "apart"), and the name is most commonly used in Denmark.
  • Samir. Used in both Arabic and Sanskrit, Samir is not related to Samuel. In Arabic, it means "evening conversationalist," and in Sanskrit it means "wind."
