Baby Girl Names From the Qur'anMeaningful and Lovely Appellations from Islam's Holy Scripture
Instead of leafing through baby name books, Muslim parents can turn to the Qur'an to find beautiful names fit for a princess.
Investing in baby name books is a great way to start searching for that perfect name for a daughter. Here are some names and their corresponding verses from another book – the Qur’an. Before choosing a name however, parents should understand their meanings and even the verses in the Qur'an that relay the same. Here are the popular picks amongst Muslim parents, especially for those expecting little girls. The Name FirdausFirdaus is a popular name for Muslim girls and is known as the highest level of Paradise in the Qur'an. The word Firdaus is seen many times in the Qur'an, often describing the reward of those who are righteous and engage in good deeds. Here is one of the verses where the term "Firdaus" pops up "Verily! Those who believe (in the Oneness of Allâh) and do righteous deeds, shall have the Gardens of Al-Firdaus (the Paradise) for their entertainment." [Al-Kahf: 107]. Since Firdaus is the highest level of Paradise – which is said to have 100 levels – Firdaus is known as the eternal home to the best of Muslims, the Prophets, those who have lived in poverty and martyrs. Muslims often pray for a place in Firdaus and parents who name their daughters by the same name are said to be praying for their daughters' well being in the Hereafter. Although Firdaus is predominantly a girl's name, there are baby boys who also carry the same nam. The Name JannahJannah is the name of Paradise itself. The word Jannah is often defined as "Gardens" in the Qur'an. Jannah surfaces in many places in the Qur'an as an incentive for good deeds and God-fearing consciousness. The names of Jannah appear in many forms such as: Jannat al-'Adn (Gardens of everlasting bliss or popularly known as Eden); Jannat al-Khuld (The Eternal Gardens); Jannat al-ma'wa' (Garden of Abode); and Jannat al-Na'im (Gardens of Delight). It also appears as a simple al-Jannah – Gardens – as in the verse below. "Say: shall I give you glad tidings of things far better than those? For the righteous are Gardens in nearness to their Lord with rivers flowing beneath;… " [Al-Imran: 15] There are many levels of Jannah – and the more good deeds one committed, the higher his or her level of abode will be in the afterlife. The Name KautharThe word Kauthar is traditionally known as a "river in Paradise." It is reported that on the Day of Judgment, believers will be led to al-Kauthar for a drink of water, and with one sip, all hunger and thirst will be vanquished forever. Verse 108 in the Qur'an, entitled Al-Kauthar, is recorded as the shortest verse in the Scripture, with a three-sentence length. In this verse, the root word of Kauthar is translated into: 'abundance of good.' Kauthar is mentioned only once in the Qur'an. “Surely We have given thee abundance of good. So pray to thy Lord and sacrifice. Surely thy enemy is cut off from good.” [Al-Kauthar: 1-3] The Name RaihanRaihan is described as the "fragrance of Paradise." In some reports, it is the basil leaf or a "sweet-smelling" plant that will be a reward for generosity. The basil plant today has been found to be a popular natural remedy for illnesses relating to the respiratory tract. Basil massage oil is also said to relieve headaches and used as a treatment for nervous disorders. Raihan is predominantly a boy’s name. ‘Female’ variations include Raihani, Raihana and Reyhana. However, some parents do name their daughters simply, Raihan. “It is He Who has spread out the earth for (His) creatures: Therein is fruit and date-palms, producing spathes (enclosing dates); Also corn, with (its) leaves and stalk for fodder, and sweet-smelling plants. Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?” (Ar-Rahman: 10-13) The Name RawdahIn the Qur’an, the place of Rawdah – a luxurious meadow – is promised to those who engage in righteous deeds. Rawdah is a popular name amongst Asian Muslims. Rawdah is often described as a garden full of sweetest scents and one of the most merciful blessings in the hereafter. “…But those who believe and work righteous deeds will be in the luxuriant meadows of the Gardens: they shall have, before their Lord, all that they wish for. That will indeed be the magnificent Bounty (of Allah)…” (As-Shura: 22) Those who are placed in the Rawdah live nearby to Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him). In a Hadith he says: "What is between my house and my minbar is a Rawdah - one of the Gardens of Paradise." The minbar is the pulpit at a Masjid. The Name RayyanRayyan is a popular girl’s name after an entrance of Paradise. Muslims who constantly observe the fast enter Paradise through this gate. The name Rayyan is not mentioned in the Qur’an but in an authentic Hadith below. “There is a door to heaven called Al-Rayyan through which only fasting people are admitted. It will be asked; where are the fasting people? They stand up. No one is admitted through that door except them. When they have entered, the door will be closed and no one else can get through it.” (Bukhari) Fasting is a pillar of the Islamic faith and in one Hadith, Allah relays that: all worship was created for the good of mankind, whereas fasting is for Him. There are many types of fasts, including the obligatory Ramadan fast. Other customary fasts include fasting on Mondays and Thursday (when the reels of deeds are brought to heaven) and certain days of other months. Fasting invokes the feelings of humility and a great appreciation for the blessings made-available in one's daily life. The Name TasneemTasneem is the name of a water spring in Paradise and is described as a drink for those who engage in fair trade. The water of Tasneem is said to be slaked in wine – a permissible and rewarding drink in Paradise – for those who conducted fair and ethical business deals during life on earth. The name of Tasneem is seen once in the Qur'an: “Their thirst will be slaked with Pure Wine sealed. The seal thereof will be Musk: And for this let those aspire, who have aspirations. With it will be (given) a mixture of Tasneem.” [Al-Mutafiffin: 25-27] Tasneem is a popular name for girls and is commonly found in countries such as Turkey, Pakistan and those in Arab countries. Some baby boys do carry the name too. Names from the Qur’anHere are just a few names found in the Qur'an for baby girls. For parents who wish to pick a name from this selection rather than form a lengthy baby name book, learning the meanings of the names is a good way to automatically pray for their daughter. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) encouraged parents to provide their children with meaningful names as it would benefit them on earth all the way through to the hearafter.
