The saint’s personality or patronage may be something parents hope their son to inherit. Parents may simply want to choose a more traditional name that reflects the family’s faith in preparation for the sacrament of baptism or a name that leaps from the pages of Catholic history. Saint Anthony of Padua lived as a hermit only emerging to attend mass. Augustine, August, Agustin (majestic) August 28 – he is the patron saint of brewers, printers, and theologians. Raised Christian, he dabbled in many philosophies, walked away from his faith, and led a wild life. Upon reflection, he recanted his evil ways and was baptized with the encouragement of his mother into the Catholic faith. Whether by date, meaning of name, fact, or patronage, selecting a name that honors a saint is a great way to deepen the connection between a child with his faith.
