There are many choices when selecting the perfect name for a new addition to the family. Catholic parents and others may want to consider a name that honors a saint.

Choosing a name with saintly significance may be rewarding and meaningful to a family and its new baby boy. The feast day may be significant to the baby boy’s new life or the saint’s personality or patronage may be something parents hope their son to inherit. With so many names that leap from the pages of Catholic history, parents might consider naming their newborn son in honor of a saint.

Saint Names That Convey Specific Meaning

Parents may ponder who their son will grow to emulate and seek a name that projects that character trait. They may seek a name that conveys strength or gentleness. For other parents, the date of birth or passing of a loved one holds significant meaning as a milestone in their family’s life. The saint names below include their meaning, feast day, and some history and or patronage of each saint.

Saints Names for Boys Beginning With B and C

Benjamin (son of the right hand) March 31 – This Deacon was imprisoned for preaching his faith. He was released with the condition that he cease preaching about Christ. He refused to oblige and continued to teach about Christ. He is the patron saint of preachers.

Bernard (bold as a bear) August 20 – A Doctor of the Church, Saint Bernard preached in France, Italy, and Germany. He is the patron saint of bees, bee keepers, and candle makers.

Brendan, Brandon (sword) May 16 – Saint Brendan was a navigator who is storied to have sailed with a crew of Irish monks across the Atlantic to America in the 6th century. He is the patron saint of whales, travelers, and sailors.

Brian,Bryan (strong) December 1 – Known as the “beautiful youth” Saint Alexander Briant was an English Jesuit of strong faith.

Bruno (brown) October 6 – He is the patron of the possessed and felt that joy came from serving God and hard work.

Charles, Carl, Carlos, Karol (strong) November 4 – Suffering from a speech impediment Saint Charles Borromeo believed that “we are all weak, but if we want help, the Lord God has given us the means to find it easily.” He is the patron saint of libraries, boarding schools and apple orchards.

Colin, Colman, Colum, Cullen (dove) November 23 – Saint Columban was born in Ireland and travelled preaching the teachings of Christ. He often took time to reflect on his faith in the forest.

Cornelius, Neil, Connor (horn) September 16 – Saint Cornelius was elected Pope during a divisive period in the church. His diplomacy helped temper struggles during his turbulent papacy. He is the patron saint of cattle.

The names Colin and Cullen confer a feeling of peace while in contrast, Carl or Brandon denote might. While parents do not need to be students of onomatology, they may consider the meaning that certain saint names convey when selecting a name for baby boy.
