Castor Oil to Induce LaborHow using castor oil can help you induce your labor.
Using castor oil is an effective way to induce labor. Yet castor oil induction can have negative side effects for some expectant mothers. Find out how to avoid problems.
How does castor oil work to induce labor? When the bowels are stimulated, your body makes prostaglandins. These hormones are helpful to contract the smooth muscles of your body including the uterus. Some people also think that castor oil may work by causing dehydration, which is also known to stimulate contractions. What is the best way to take castor oil?Castor oil has a very unpleasant aroma and taste, so mothers might find it easier to take castor oil mixed with something else. There are also brands available which are flavorless and odorless. Recipes include mixing castor oil with orange juice, or into a smoothie or mixing it with eggs and then scrambling them. The recommended dosage can vary anywhere from 2 T to several ounces and then sometimes repeated. It is very important that you get the appropriate dosage amount from your midwife or obstetrician before trying any castor oil induction. Are there disadvantages of using castor oil? While castor oil can work very well to stimulate contractions, it can mean cramping, diarrhea and therefore having to stay near a bathroom for many hours. You can easily become dehydrated so it is important to increase your fluids if you plan to do a castor oil induction. Another disadvantage is that you can have all the negative side affects (diarrhea and cramping)and still not go into labor. Or you go into labor quickly but continue to have loose bm's even hours after you give birth. Be sure you check with your provider and prepare for the downside of this type of induction. You may need to weigh the pros and cons of a castor oil induction versus a pitocin induction, since neither is ideal and they both can have disadvantages. Have you thought about a castor oil induction? Or did you have success with using one? Tell us. See the series for other methods to naturally induce labor.

IT WORKS! I went into labor within about an hour after taking it, before
the diarrhea started! I mixed it with orange juice.

dont wanna do pitocin as of this tuesday...

I cannot recommend castor oil because for some people, the side effects are
brutal and they still don't go into labor. It comes down to making a
personal decision, i.e. what is worse - hours of pitocin or hours of going
to the bathroom?
It is always a good idea to check with your care provider before you take anything medicinal during pregnancy. Brenda

I just took it 30 minutes ago. Nothing so far, and I'm a bit skeptical
that it will do anything besides cause diarrhea, but I'm past due and
desperate and not scheduled for induction until Weds.

I took castor oil last night. I am 38 weeks pregnant and I did not
experience diarrea, however I did have contractions most of the night but
then they stopped.

all you woman who are taking it before your expected due date are really
idiotic.
i don't think you should even attempt to take it before at least a week overdue. if at all, it's dangerous for the baby, because not only will you have numerous bowel movements, but your risking the baby having one as well while in the womb. getting the feces in the babies eyes, mouth, ect is EXTREMELY dangerous.

Do you have any literature or research to support that taking castor oil
increases the chances of meconium?
Sep 25, 2008 9:32 AM

there are no reasons to associate castor oil induction with having an
affect on baby passing meconium. heres some people taking about it on this

I've been reading up and there isn't a connection between taking caster oil
and meconium, there is a connection between going past your due date
(usually 41 weeks or more) and meconium.
Sep 26, 2008 6:01 AM
Brenda Lane :
Yes the association between postdates and meconium is well-documented.
That is why it is always good to be sure you have research to support what
you say. Not to mention if you hear something that you aren't sure about -
look it up yourself!

it is a proven fact that castor oil will not affect the baby because it has
a nutritional value of 0 so you stomach does not absorb it into your blood
stream witch we all know is where the baby gets all of it nutrients and
oxygen from so there is no reason for a baby to have a bowel movement
Oct 2, 2008 6:19 AM
Brenda Lane :
That is why it is important to back up your comments with research or
proof.
Oct 5, 2008 12:36 PM

Having read a number of toher articles then all thse comments it seems to
me that the likelihood of the foetus passing murconium is probaby more
closely related to foetal distress due to maternal dehydrtion than the
castor oil itself. However, dehydration is a recognised way of inducing
labour and castor oil is known to cause dehydration, so general caution and
drinking plenty of water whilst using castor oil would seem sensible to
me.
I've given birth twice, once following ptosin induction due to being postdate and preclamptic and the other spontaneously at 37 weeks. I'm on here for a friend who is getting desperate with 36 hours to go before induction in a hospital she hates, but my thoughts are with you all going through the same frustration.

I agree with most of the comments on taken it and feeling nothing. I took
2T and feel asleep. Woke up to make dinner for husband and 2 other
children, so far nothing. I have now taken another 2T for the max of 2 oz
recommended....NOTHING. I am 50% effaced and dialated to a 3-4,
contractions 1 min apart for 3 days....will this really work cause right
now I say it is crap.

Castor oil can not only make you have a bowel movement, but also make the
baby pass its meconium in the placenta, which can cause infections and
problems for the baby. I've also heard cases where castor oil causes the
placenta to slip from the uterus, which leads to hemorrhaging. Some people
use castor oil to cause miscarriage. SO use with caution.

Here's another bonus to Castor Oil: With my second baby, during delivery,
I actually pooped on the delivery table. Mortifying! However, with my
third, I took Castor Oil. The diarhea cleared my bowels, so there was no
chance of that happening again, and yes, the castor oil worked within 6
hours. But the baby arrived before the doctor did.

making them regular. Can someone please help?!!! Oh yeah, I have been

I am officially due tomorrow and I plan on taking castor oil within a few
hours. I used it with my son and I had him 12 hours after taking it (was
only in labor for 5 hours). I was 3 days past due at that time. However, I
am taking it a few days earlier this time because my doctor wants to induce
me with synthetic oxytocin on Tuesday due to a grade 3 placenta and that is
the last thing that I want to take place. So I am claiming that my baby
will be born tomorrow on it's EDD. Tomorrow is also my grandmother's bday,
so it will be very special for him/her to come on that day. Please keep
your fingers crossed and send prayers up if you happen to read this
today!!!
I plan to take 1 ounce of castor oil in 6 ounces of OJ, I may do it again around midnight, but I hoping one dose will get the job done. I have my bags and camcorder at the door, I'm so ready to go!!! I will post again to let you all know how it went. IA

down some since then...so i tried something a friend suggested...just do a
little at a time with some root beer...so, at 3:30 this afternoon i took
some root beer, poured it in a glass, and added a teaspoon of castor
oil...right after i downed that, i did another teaspoon, and then one
more...some people say to take 3 teaspoons, while i also hear 3 tablespoons
from others...which is more better??...how long should i wait before i try
more??...i definitely dont want to over do it...but should i try
tablespoons next time if the 3 teaspoons dont work??...thanx for any
advice!!!

I did the Castor oil thing Friday morning. After about 4 hours had
diarhea. Nothing to severe. I also made surwe to drink plenty of fluids.
Saturday felt terrible, like I had the flu, lots of vomitting. Same
situation on Sunday, except now I had a headache that would not go away,
and on Monday was in the hospital receiving two liters of IV fluids due to
dehydration. Never has a single contraction. I took two ounces. I really
don't reccomend it, but if you do it maybe try a lower dose.

I just took 2-2.5 Tbsp. about two hours ago, and already had a whole lot of
diarrhea (sorry to share the details). I've started having some mild
contractions, just waiting now to see if they become more
"regular". It seems like the general concensus of people who have
tried is that it either did nothing, or started doing something pretty
quickly, which it has for me. I've got my fingers crossed!

I am 38 weeks and 3 days, with lots of pressure and contractions for the
last two days. I read about castor oil in a friends book of mine and it
said to take 2tablespoons with orange juice. One hour later take another
tablespoon and another half an hour after that. So I got home and tried it
right away, with evening primrose oil and raspberry leaf tea... it is now
4.5 hours after I took the first dose... and NOTHING. Not one bowel
movement and no contractions... I totally give up and figure just waiting
it out is the only wany to meet my second baby girl.

Wow, I am past due and I am a labor and delivery R.N. I am really disturbed
by how many 37 weekers are drinking castor oil to induce labor. Term is
37-42 weeks. Most hospitals consider it 38-42 weeks, because the risk of
respiratory problems is greatly increased at 37 weeks. Babies generally
come out when they have finished developing,... its nature. At 37 weeks,
there is a chance your baby could actually need 5 more weeks to develop.
This is awful...I actually feel a bit sick.

I am 39 weeks and 2 days. I have always had to do pitocin with my other 2

in a few days, but I want to say something to the moms who try this before
38 weeks, Please don't. you could be putting your baby in danger. I had my
son @ 38 weeks and he was not ready yet so I know there is a reason they
say 40 wks, because thats what it takes, just try and be patient. I have
had 2 and am ready 2 deliver 3rd one so I know how hard it is.

I am considering taking castor oil...I'm 41 weeks +1, 4th child, 1st and
third children went one day over due date and were 7.5 pounds, second
daughter was 3.5 weeks overdue (yes, she was...I knew when I was fertile)
and 10 pounds...no GD either. Not wanting to birth another ten pound baby,
or go 3 weeks overdue, I am trying it. I am not sleeping and am pretty much
ready to have this baby. I think my ten pounder would have been fine coming
on time.

I am 37 weeks today...took castor oil around 3 or 4pm. 4 onces all at once
chased it with Pepsi. it tasted awful but I am desperate. I'm a mom of 5
and my youngest was born Dec 28th. Its hard trying to make Christmas
"happen" like you want when your are expecting any day. Since
the "cocktail" I've had 3 0r 4 "bathroom experiences none
too-too bad and the diarrhea cramping seems about gone. Now I am having
contractions I would say on a scale to 10 they're about a 5. I guess I will
be waitng to see what happens... I am most curious because I have tried the
castor oil with 2 previous pregnancies and it didnt even work as a laxative
much less a labor stimulator. Soooo this is already different. I will keep

I took it with my first and it worked, with in 2 hours my water broke.
Probably a couple a of trips to the bathroom and it broke. My second was 8
days late and I tried it like 4 different times through out that last week
and it never worked! I couldnt believe it. I had to be induced with
pitocin. Now I am pregnant with my third and 38 weeks and was hospitalized
over the weekend with high blood pressure. They arent going to induce
unless it gets higher and I dont want to let it get any higher so I just
took about 2 oz castor oil in a root beer float. So we will see if this
one is as stubborn as my last or as easy as my first....

Well I guess this child is going to be just as stubborn as my last one. I
drank that stuff 4 and half hours ago and i'm all emptied out with nothin

cervix is soft and i am a centimeter dialated.... so what then??

I posted on October 31st stating that I was going to take 1 oz caster oil
with 6 oz of oj. I drank it around 6, started feeling contractions around
midnight and met my beautiful daughter at 5:49 the next morning. So it
worked in less than 12 hours as hoped. But keep in mind, I had her on her
due date, I was not 36 weeks or even 38 weeks. If I have another child and
am late or the doctor wants to do a synthetic induction, I would definitely
induce this way first. I went from 3 cm to 8 cm in 45 minutes (true story),
now I won't say it wasn't intense during those 45 minutes, but by the time
I finally got to the labor and delivery room I was ready to push. The only
reason I didn't push immediately was because my midwife wasn't there yet.
But as soon as she sat down and told me that I could push, I pushed my
daughter out in one push. So I am definitely a big advocate for castor oil.
Thanks to the creator of this website, it gave me the courage I needed to
use this age old remedy again after 9 years. IA

Using castor oil may start contractions because it stimulates your smooth
muscle, but unless your cervix starts to change, you're not in true labor.
Be careful using this remedy, because it may just give you the runs, start
contractions that last a few hours, but then go away, dehydrate you, or
putting you into false labor and buying you some IV fluids. Some people
have had desirable results, but working in L&D as an RN, we've had
people come in that took castor oil, and yes delivered, but had horrible
diarrhea, no fun for the nurses, doctors, or for baby when he or she is
coming out, and mortifying for the patient. Not to mention diarrhea after
you have delivered, and just think how terrible that is when you've had
lacerations or an episiotomy. Also, these women who want to
"induce" themselves at 37 weeks need to be a little more patient,
let your buns bake all the way, ladies! They will come when they're ready,
and the guilt of something being wrong with your baby because they were a
smidge early can be devastating. I'm not trying to be negative, just
realistic and reminding you all of the risks.

I am debating whether to take the castor oil today... I am 38+4, been
having contractions on and off for nearly 2 weeks, very uncomfortable, not
sleeping, baby fully engaged. My 3year old daughter was born spontaneously
at 36weeks, fully healthy and fine. My midwife is suprised baby hasn't
arrived yet. I am just fed up with the waiting in pain.. keep thinking its
time, then contractions stop. So frustrating!! Think I might try a small
dose tonight.. see if anything happens! Will keep updating. RR.

Hi, I posted 17/12, held off taking castor oil.. yesterday see midwife, she
said baby is ready, and said to use the oil as last resort. Have tried all
other methods, after sex yest I had a 'show' contractions started, began
building up, then stopped again!!!! So frustrating. All day today nothing,
so just taken small dose, approx 1.5 tablespoons of CO with lucazade,
didn't find it too gross.. just hope it works!! That was approx 40mins
ago... so I will update if any progress!!! Fingers crossed!!! RR

How much is everyone taking? I just took 2 tsp's, and I am almost 40 weeks,
baby #6, 3cm's 100% effaced, with a buldging bag of water... do you think
it will work?
Dec 21, 2008 3:38 PM
Guest :
Hi, well for me castor oil worked. And it worked perfectly. I last posted
on 19/12/08, after taking the CS with lucazade, I had nothing all night,
watched a film, no pains, thought 'oh its not worked'. Contemplated taking
more before sleep, bbut decided I'd just get good nights sleep, approx
40mins after going to sleep my waters broke at 12.45am along with full on
contractions, just got to hospital in time for my gorgeous baby boy to be
born at 1.43am- 60mins from start to finish. Absolutely amazing, no
stitches (unlike the dozens I had with my first), felt good, no diarohea or
any unpleasantness.
I would definately use the CS again, if I truely felt that baby was ready as I did this time, and midwife confirmed. I guess it doesn't work for everyone if baby is not ready, not in great position, but for me it worked after approx 6and half hours, bringing a very quick labour. Thanks to the creator of this site, and to all those that have previously posted. Good luck to all those waiting mothers-to be!!

Thanks so much to the creator of this site.... i really was looking for
something like this. I am 38 week pregnant... maybe... well at least 38
weeks (my due date was Dec 19th, then it was dec 26th, then it was jan 6th
then it moved back... the docs can't seem to make up their minds and the
ultrasounds never agree) I lost my mucus plug yesterday and I am 3 cm / 85%
effaced. The Doctors have told me the baby is so low they can feel her head
when they check my cervix all they need is the contractions to come and
stay, right now they go away after a few hours. I was considering castor
oil for the last day after i have walked and had so much sex that i can't
even stand up really from the pain in my legs.... baby is ready and so am I
so lets see if this work.

I had my 2nd baby while in Germany stationed with my husband in the
military. I was seen for my entire pregnancy at the best hospital in the
area and when I reached 41 weeks my doctor suggested induction. I simply
assumed that it would be done with pitocin which I was given in the U.S.
with my first baby but when I arrived they had me drink a mix of castor
oil, o.j, and champagne. I had my doubts especially since I threw up
within 30 min of drinking it, but sure enough another hour later I was In
labor! I had no epidural and no complications. And it was much less
painful than the pitocin induction. In my experience, the 2nd birth
induced with castor oil and no epidural was 10 times easier than the one
induced with pitocin and I did have an epidural.

42 weeks & 4 days, first contractions began 2 days ago, but mostly
irregular - right now they are 40 minutes apart. Water broke at 9pm two
nights ago too, and per my midwife I must induce at the hospital after 72
hours - that is tomorrow night. I've tried every remedy under the sun
except castor oil, and just took 2oz at 5:30pm, so far just a little gas,
nothing else. So it's 8am and I'm taking another oz. I'll report back if
I can. Please note, I've had regular non-stress tests and sonograms, the
hospital always wants me to stay, but they always confirm that my baby and
i are healthy as horses.

I am 40 weeks one day pregnant I go to the doctor tommorrow to see about
being induced. (I have been diagnosed with sciatica- meaning the baby is
laying on my sciatic nerve....extremely painful- and have had to have non
stress tests and sonograms for the past month and a half) I tried CO with
my last pregnancy and got nothing out of it...no diarrea,no contractions or
cramps or anything. This is my third baby and I have been induced with
pitocin with both of my previous pregnancies, one due to preeclampsia and
the other for being overdue. If doctor doesn't decide to induce me
tommorrow I am going to try the castor oil to end my pain. I have been
dialated to 3.5 cm and almost completely effaced now for almost a month.
It is time for my little princess to make her grand appearance. Please
note that the castor oil will not work if your baby is not ready to come
and you should never try to induce a labor before you are 40 weeks along.
A full term pregnancy is from 38-42 weeks and due dates can be off by up to
two weeks. To be on the safe side wait till you are 40 weeks. then you
know baby is term.....I can relate to being over being pregnant trust me
the pain I am suffering is greatly intense but for my baby's health and
well being I have waited this long. Try to hang in there till you are 40
weeks. Take care

well I went to the doctor today and he decided once again not to induce me
with the pitocin. He was going to induce me this Thursday but when he
checked his calendar he noticed he will be on vacation the rest of this
week and will not be back until next Tuesday. So he has scheduled me to be
induced on Friday, January 9th meaning I will be 42 weeks almost. I am not
waiting that long so tonight I plan to try the castor oil. Sonogram today
shows baby is quite healthy and over 7 pounds so she should be alright.
Wish me luck!!!!!! Does anyone else on here have any updates?

I was due 12/31 and took 1 ounce with a little bit of water on 12/30 at
10pm. I had been dilated to 2 and 50% eff. for about 3 weeks. I started
having contractions around 2am and went to the hospital at 3-3:30am. they
admitted me because I had went up to 3. Broke my water at 6 am had my son
at 10:28am. I so happy that i didnt have to be induced with him like I did
my last two children and I would take the castor oil again if I had to.
Everyone was telling me to take it like two weeks ago but I didnt think
that it would work and i'm glad I didnt. I wanted to wait until my due date
since its best for the baby.
If you plan on taking this method please wait until your due date, just remember your Dr could be off by two weeks either way.

I'm 38 weeks pregnant to my 4th child, my first girl. My first two were
natural labor, my third I had my membranes stripped and went into labor 26
hours later. With this baby, I just tried castor oil, 2oz, four hours later
another ounces then another four hours later. Nothing at all happened. All
it did was soften my bowel movement a little. Like I heard also Girls are

I posted yesterday about taking castor oil. I was due 12/30/08 and had not
had any signs of labor. I took 2oz last night and went into labor this
morning. I am not in full blown labor yet but I have been being monitored
and the doc says it will be early morning or day time tomorrow. I would
reccomend trying castor oil, but only if your overdue. Prior to being 40
weeks and without any progression, it will not work. I know from
experience. Just wanted to let you all know about my experience with it.

Ladies, let me tell you that I took castor oil on Tuesday Jan. 7, 2009 at
515 pm or so. Took 3 teaspoons with orange juice. Nothing but false
LABOR!!! so mad, went to hospital at 1:30 in morning with 5 minute apart
contractions and NO dialation. Next day contractions went away and I took
another spoon or two. Diarreah is guaranteed!! but hours of false labor for
me. I am done trying I will just wait it out at this point. so my advice
is that castor only works for the very few but it will get something
started!

I am due Monday and will be induced if she isn't here by Wednesday. Last
week at my ultrasound she weighed about 7lb7oz. I have been having regular
cintractions 1 to 4 minutes apart for the last 3 weeks. BUt My cervix isn't
dilating past 1cm. I have walked, walked and walked some more. We have been
having sex 2x a day. MOnday I was 50% effaced and baby was a -3 station.
athe dr stripped my membranes. Said to come back Monday on my DD and we
would set up an induction for Wednesday if she wasn't here. Well it is now
Thursday and I really don't want to have to wait this weekend out. So last
night about 8pm I took 2tbls mixed with about 6 oz of juice. THe taste and
smell weren't bad. Tasted like pulpy OJ. I got the CVS brand. I went to the
bathroom about 9 but nothing too loose. I went to bed and woke up at 11:30
with horrible contractions. I changed postions, drink water, got up and
walked and nothing changed. They were coming every 2 to 3 minutes. I told
my husband I didn't want to go to the hospital yet because I didn't want to
turn around and come back home. It's a 30 -45 minute drive. I kept feeling
like I needed to go use the bathroom but went in there and sat in the
toilet and just peed a little. About 1 am I decided to take a hot shower
too see if it helped the back pain. It gave me alot of relief. I woke up a
couple times with hard contractions but wsa able to sleep the rest of the
night. I figure if I can sleep I'm not in labor. I woke up and have had BH
all day, I guess cause they haven't been painful. I am going to take 3 more
tbls in a little but and then another tbls about an hr later. We will see
what heppens. I have been hooked to the monitor at the hospital like 4
times because of my regular contractions and she is always very happy and
healthy so I am not worried about her being in distress because of
contractions. I hope she comes tonight. The hospital will be busy tomorrow
with the full moon and all.

afraid its not going to work and Im done with getting my hopes up. I'll

figure out how to get over the taste and the doctors won't induce me only a

here's the deal-
it will work if your body is ready it does not pass the placental barrier, so the meconium-castor oil association is just bunk. we're talking about CASTOR, NOT castrol oil (castrol oil is motor oil, people) you should start off in small doses 1st---leaving the contractions to be more manageable...if you take a ton, the contractions can be comparable for some women to those from pitocin. It should only be used as a kick-start if you're body has been contracting (painful ones, NOT just b-h ones), you are already effaced and dilating, and I think it typically works more effectively for 2nd +births.

I used Castor Oil with my second baby at 37.5 weeks, it made me feel a
little nauseas and I had the runs and nothing happened but a few
contractions. Then... I tried it again a few days later, used 60 mls in
Pineapple juice. Yes it did taste awful and I had the runs for a few
hours, but I didn't need an enema at the hospital, and my little lady
arrived 10 hours later perfectly healthy. It will not cause the baby to
poop inside you. Castor oil cannot pass over the placenta, only your blood
does. If your baby passes a bowel movement inside you due to your uterus
contracting, it was going to happen in natural labour anyway, so you can't
blame the castor oil. Casotr oil is safe. If your baby is not ready to
come out, she won't and you'll just feel crappy for a few hours, but if she
is ready, then is just gives her a nudge. Medically speaking I would not
try it until you are atleast 37 weeks and you have dialated a little bit
(2-3cms). My 3rd is due later this month and I will definately be using
the castor oil again, shortened my labour I am sure!

My daughter is now 1 day overdue with her second child and she is very
anxious to have her baby girl. She took Castor Oil with her first baby, she
took it 15 minutes ago with her second baby but this time I have encouraged
her to have a different viewpoint. I will explain I must speak up about
Castor oil and say Yes and No! Let me explain, first let me say I speak
from experience I have had six children spanning from the years 1978
through 2000 which was the birth of my last child. I have noticed some vast
changes with my first two babies when admitted to the hospital at 3 to 4 cm
you were prepped, they shaved you and gave you an enema, (they no longer do
this but some hospital will do it if you ask) I assisted my daughter with
the birth of her first child she had done everything to bring on her labor
all (before) close but before! her due date Castor Oil etc.. lots of pain
and a lot of diarrhea. The Doctor finally induced my daughter which I was
not happy about, she got very sick and dropped to the floor and almost
passed out, I demanded they take out the needles and the medicine, I
finally took matter into my own hands I got her Vitamin C and EPO (Evening
Primrose Oil) and she had only 1 cup of Red Raspberry Tea as she did not
like it and since I am a Massage Therapist of 19 years I started working on
her pressure points, well guess what she started dilating and her cervix
started softening very quickly the midwife and Doctor asked what was I
doing I told them and her baby boy came naturally and quickly (the Pitocin
and the Castor Oil gave her undue pain and no baby for her first child.)
Now with her second baby I encouraged her to relax and view the Castor Oil
as a product that will clean her out before her baby then she will relax
with a Aromatherapy bath followed by a relaxing Massage Including
pressure point work and Visualization of her bringing her little girl into
this world! My suggestion is to do a lot of walking especially relax,
relax and relax! Massage and pressure points, EPO & Viatmin C , Castor
Oil only if you want a good cleaning out with no high expectations of going
into labor, you could but you might not.
Have a happy, safe and relaxing delivery and Congratulation on your new Pride and Joy!

I have been reading all the comments about castor oil on the website. I
have weighed my pro's and cons and have decided to go for it. I am now 39

course of 2 hours. I will keep you posted on the results. Keeping my

I just took 4 tablespoons of castor oil at 5 pm today (I am 38 weeks
pregnant and have had continuous but irratic and ineffective contractions,
am 1 cm dialated and 50% effaced, with the baby so low down I can feel the
head if I insert my fingers) and I immediately had to run to the bathroom
and had diarrhea. I will post again if this is effective. I did not mix the
oil with anything; took it in 4 shots, followed by sips of Coke for the
taste. It does not taste as bad as I thought it would, it's just very thick
and greasy. If I do not have contractions by midnight I will try another
dose. Wish me luck! Niki

i am 38 weeks prego, having contractions for a week already. They are not
regular tho and the intensity of them change constantly! I went to the
hospital when they were regular and was 1cm dialated. I went back in on
wednesday and was only around 1 1/2cm dialated. I am so tired of irregular
contractions. My doctor says baby is ready to come but is just being
stubborn. I am wondering about using castor oil! any one have any
advice?...email destructive_discoveries@hotmail.com

contractions! Went to the hospital and contractions were only 3 minutes
apart! I was soooo excited until the nurse came in and said they were
stopping my labor! uh! It was because I was only 36 weeks.

diarrhea. It is now a lil afeter midnight and ive 8 days overdue! Thats
just goes to show that every woman is different. Ps those of you wondering
why you cant get the baby to come when your only 37-38 weeks
along....Hello!! Ur not full term until 40 weeks. U can be ready all u want
but its up to the baby! Plus if ur date was actually off and ur only 36

I am not sure if you should take castor oil or not but if you are going
to do it you should do it right. The first time I took it several times and ended up with diahrea (can't spell) during delivery. Second and third time 2 tablespoons or more in or followed by orange juice right after a really big meal. Diahrea over before delivery. The theory is that the rumbling of your bowels makes your uteris think it is contracting so it joins right in. My second child was born with the cord around her neck and she did breath in moconium, but I think she would have died if I would have waited for the doctors she was already 2 weeks over due. I also think the stress was caused by the cord being wrapped around her neck. I never had a natural labour I used castor oil each time. Oh and the baby will arrive that day.

am 2 cm and 70-80% as of yesterday. I have been having contractions off and

go into labor naturally, I have to have a repeat C-Section, DO NOT WANT
THAT!!!!

bed and at 12am in the bathroom for another 30 minutes. went back to bed
and woke up at 7am in the bathroom for another 20 minutes. no labor
contractions. just braxton hicks. it did not work for me. but it is a great
way to feel cleansed as long as you drink alot of fluids. i will not try

I used castor oil with my second baby (3 and then 2 days before my due
date), and I would definitely recommend it to others. There are a few
things you have to make sure of, though:
It's not going to work if you're not close to your due date. 37 and 38 weekers are probably just torturing themselves for nothing You have to take enough for it to work. I made the mistake of taking too little the first time (only 2 oz). A teaspoon is DEFINITELY not going to do anything. The second time I took 3 oz (mixed with Pepsi), then 2 OZ an hour or so later. I had cramping and diarrhea, but I went into labor that night. AND I had the benefit of being "cleaned out" so i didn't have a BM on the delivery table, as I did with my first! I'm preggo again, and if the baby's not here by week 40 I would be more than happy to induce this way again! (For the record, my second baby was due on my first's birthday, so i induced so they wouldn't both be April 10)

I'm pregnant with my third child but only 36 weeks along. I'm waiting till
38 weeks (per doctor's request for health of the baby) and then trying
castor oil again because it worked with my two other pregnancies. With my
first,I waited till I was two days away from my due date and I took 2
tablespoons with orange juice at 11pm. I wasn't dilated or efaced at the
time but I woke up the next morning at 8am in labor and he was born at 1am
the following morning. With my second I waited till I had a week left and
did 2 tablespoons with orange juice again at 11pm. This time I was already
dilated to 2 ended up in labor and I was admitted at 5am and he was born at
10am. I will add though that I tried at 38 weeks with my second child and
of course nothing happened except diarrhea, but it was welcomed since I was
also constipated at the time. Luckily when I actually went into with both
my children I never experienced the diarrhea by taking the castor oil and
there were no complications during birth. Therefore I look forward to
enjoying the next two weeks and seeing if my luck will work again on this
pregnancy when I'm at 38 weeks. If nothing else I will be cleared out again
and it will relieve some of this pressure. Good Luck Ladies

After reading all the comments i'm gonna go for it tomorrow. I'm 38weeks n
4cm dialated with a big baby. I've been in a lot of pain n pretty much bed
ridden. My friends that have tried it all swear by it. They said take 2tbsp
and stay really active for an hour (go for a walk or clean house)
afterwards and then take 2more after that. I'm keepin my fingers crossed.
This is my third one n i tried CO with my 2nd n it didn't work but...i took
it to early, didn't take enough or stay active so i think i did it wrong. I
will post an update.

I am 38 weeks + 5 days and going to be indcued next Thurday. I have heard
so many bad things about the potosin that i am going to try the castor oil
tonight. i am going to do a recipe that I found mixing 2 tablespoons with 3
eggs and then scrambling them. I am hoping that it will at least cause
contrations enough for my doctor to go ahead and induce me now! I delivered
at 38 weeks with my first two children and think this little guy is just to
comfortable. I am 100% efaced and dialated 2 cm he is also in position.

i took castor oil to go into labor 2 times.the first time it took about 12
hours and my son was there. the second time it was about 8 hours and my
daughter was born. i notice that castor oil makes you have heavy
contractions and you will poop while giving birth. my grandma was the one
who told me about it. she used it to go into labor with my mom! 2-3
tablespoons works great

So i took the CO last night. 1oz at nine and another at ten. By 12:30 i
started to have diahrea. It wasn't that bad like i thought it would be. At
3:30 i started having major contractions but they stopped 2hrs later. I was
pretty bummed out. Here i am 24hrs later n still pregnant. I dont think i
will try it again cuz it just tasted so gross i could hardly keep it down
and i would hate to give myself hemroids but i tell you what...it sure
feels good not to be constipated anymore. Lol!!! I have tried everything so
i'm giving up n letting my lil girl come when she is ready. Good luck to
you ladies who try it. Just make sure you are stocked up on TP.

Unfortunately this time with the castor oil did not work for me. I'm
currently 38 weeks and 4 days with my third child. Castor oil worked with
my first two pregnancies so I decided to try again with this one. I had no
cramping but did have diarrhea and then twelve hours later started having
contractions every five minutes apart but they did not increase in pain.
After five hours of constant contractions though I decided to go to the
hospital to be examined but it was false labor and the contractions
eventually ended. I'm being induced next Thursday so I'm not going to try
again I'll just wait it out. It basically boils down to if your baby is
ready, and obviously mine wasn't this go round. It's okay she'll be here
soon enough. Hope you ladies have better luck :)

Castor oil sucks! period! Horrible and nearly impossible to ingest. Then a
half and hour after I finally got it down I puked it all up. No pooping but
here it is the next day and guess what I'm still pregnant. Day 5 (overdue).
O well. O and I tried raspberry tea, blue and black cohosh, cumin tea,
primrose oil, pineapple, mango, spicy food, sex galor and nothing worked.
So if your a desperate pregnant lady (believe me I know the feeling) that
wants to be done, best thing to do is wait a week after your due date and
get induced from doctor. I'm pretty much at that point now.

I know OJ is a good source for absorption when taking medicine therefore
maybe you all shouldn't take it with OJ and try it with milk. There for it
should help with the diarrhea unless your lactose intolerant and that is
one of your side effects.

I'm officially 38 weeks and have had no contractions, I'm beginaing to

I'm debating on taking castor oil to try to induce, I've been so miserable
these few weeks. I can't sleep and I'm having alot of pain in my lower back

I am 37 weeks today && having lots of pain in my pelvic.. It comes
&& goes.. its hard for me to walk sometimes... i went to my weekly
check up && the doctor said that the pain was nothing to be
concerned about... yeah right it has to be something cause i have other
children && i have never felt that pain.. well my c section is for
7/1/09 && i really cant wait to pop this big baby out... thats
another thing he says its a big baby... i was thinking about drinking the
oil but i really dont think its worth it cause i took it with my third
belly && it worked but 2 days later && i had some
complications.. so word of advice found out the side effects really just do
your research online or your doctor before you drink anything... good
luck

Remember every woman and baby is different but I went to the doctor on
Tuesday and I wasn't dialated but I have been having severe contractions
and horrible lower pelvic pain for about a week. I'm 36 weeks pregnant and
I'm ready for this baby to come out! She is too! I've only gained 2 pounds
my whole pregnancy and she keeps gaining weight so I guess I've been lucky
there. However, I'm all belly and its not even extremely huge. So basically
I'm just miserable. Anyhow, I took 2 oz of Castor Oil last night and
vomitted 1 time. Went to the doctor today (scheduled appointment) and I was
1 cm dilated and my last appointment I was completely closed. The baby has
dropped and is ready. So tonight I took another 3 oz of castor oil and I
haven't had any side effects yet. The castor oil isn't bad if you chase it.
I poured the castor oil in a cup and then put some ROOT BEER in it, plugged
my nose and chugged. Then chased that with Root beer. Make sure you don't
lick your lips, thats what made me throw up last night. So wipe your mouth
immediately afterwards! My contractions are getting closer together and the
baby just dropped further down in my pelvis than she already was. Like I
said, everyone is different...but its working for me! Oh and after you take
it, sit on the end of the bed, couch, or an excercise ball and bounce up
and down and do some nipple stimulation if your really desperate! Just make
sure there is no hidden cameras or you'll look pretty insane! haha Hope
everyone does well...Good luck!

My doctor wants to induce. I am trying to avoid pitocin, so I have tried 2
tablespoons of the castor oil, so far nothing. I am about 2cm dilated
already and 38.5 weeks.
If you have a healthy pregnancy, honor the blessing of letting your body and your baby do what it does naturally. I am not allowed this blessing to wait. I wish me and my baby could just do it on our time. Relax and live your life. If you are 37 weeks or even 38. It is said that the last few weeks are very very important for brain development. Don't short change your baby because you are inpatient. Before you know it, tehe baby will be out and belong to everyone, not just you. honor that blessing.

got very strong contractions that went away after about 5 hours. I am now

going on yet. It took about 3 hours to kick in th first time. The first
time I tried 3 tbs and this time 4 tbs... I have been cleaning the house
and took a hot bath so we will see how this time goes! 2 weeks ago I was 2
cm and 25% effaced and I am now 38 weeks with baby #2 :)

I am 39 weeks pregnant and so done with being pregnant so I decided to try
out the castor oil. I put almost 3 tablespoons in a blender with orange
juice around 4:15pm today and so far I had one small bowel movement and
NOTHING else! I'm not so sure about this stuff. But I guess desperate times
call for desperate measures! I'll try anything right about now, I am so
uncomfortable!

castor oil is an awsome deal if you have partially dilated, for those of
you that the castor oil didn't work, try to drink some coffee two hours
after taking it, and off course lots of water or low sodium veg. soup.
the coffee works miracles for delayed b.ms. I do it once in while even when Imnot pregnant, even a very light cup of coffee, preferable early morning. hits the spot guarenteed... I plan to use the castor oil with my second baby.

I don't mind the taste. Castor Oil is a laxitive, so I don't know why
you're suprised about the results. I'm trying anyways. We'll see!

I used castor oil with my son. Took it before I went to bed, woke up around
7:30 the next morning to go to the bathroom, and when I got to get back in
bed, my water broke. My son was born at 12:04 pm. I did't have any
diarrhea, so I guess it works differently for everyone. But I do plan on
using it again for my daughter who is due in Dec.

Tried castor oil with my first daughter 3 days past her due date and I went
into labor. Then I tried it with my second daughter and nothing. My water
broke on it's own (was drinking red raspberry tea too) 4 days after my due
date. Tried it with my third daughter at least four different times and it
caused contractions but they were just false labor... had to be induced a
week over due (was using internal evening primrose oil capsules). Pregnant
with my fourth (38 weeks today) and they are inducing me on the 18th so I'm
going to try it again tonight... been getting some false contractions
(using tea and capsules this time) and OB said my cervix was 1 cm and soft
(commented he didn't think I would make it to my due date) so if it doesn't
work I just don't think it will... and I'm gonna wait the two weeks. But
it's worth the try! Nasty stuff but if you take it by teaspoons and wipe
your tongue immediately after taking it and drink OJ it helps with the
after taste in your mouth... burping will be really nasty for awhile
though!

posted earlier today... took 2 oz... horrible runs and cramps then even
some strong contractions but they stopped when I got on all fours to help
with the pain... now nothing. Waste of time I think... thinking of trying
another 2 oz but don't think it's worth it since I know they will def be
inducing anyhow in 2 weeks. The intensity of the pain in my stomach at times
really scared me and don't want to risk the baby or my own health just to
go into labor.

Ok as someone who tried this with all four pregnancy's more than once I
would say it doesn't work unless you are literally already in labor. It
worked with only my first and this was after my due date had already gone
by... and even then the hospital had to use pitocin to keep the labor
going, so unless you are sure your ob would help along your labor once you
start getting contractions from the castor oil, you would probably be
wasting your time. Every other time I got contractions but they always
stopped and I just got really really bad runs that made me sick and sore. I
won't try this ever again because I seriously doubt that it works. At 1 cm
dialated and a soft cervix having already been getting contractions for
over a week... this still didn't work for me so I doubt it will for most
people. I'm even using red raspberry tea and Evening Prirose capsules
internally so I just don't think it works.

I used castor oil with my first pregnancy. I took about 2 Tbsp at about
5-6 pm. At about 9pm i felt some slight cramping, but no diarreha. I laid
down and then woke up about 11:30 with more cramping and decided to take a
bath. I noticed while I was in the bath I had lost my mucus plug, i then
got out of the bath, walked to my bedroom and then my water broke with a
gush. Labor had started. It came very fast, contractions were very close
together. By the time I got to the hospital which was 45 min away I was 4
cm dilated. By 5 am I was 10 cm and ready to start pushing. Very quick
labor. Be sure if you use castor oil you are ready for a quick labor and
can get to the hospital. From the time my water broke it only took 5 hours
until I was fully dilated.

I'm 39 weeks and 6 days pregnant. I took 3 tablespoons of Castor Oil mixed
with orange juice yesterday to try and induce labor. About 2 hours later I
started to have the urge to defecate and successfully did so! I went to
the bathroom about 4 times over the course of 5 hours. I cleaned myself
out pretty good, but still no baby 24 hours later!! Needless to say it
didn't work for me and I was a bit disappointed, but it did clean me out
and it wasn't so bad. I don't think I would do it again simply because it
didn't work for me!

BEST ADVICE EVER:
They say pinapple is a natural way to induce labor too. Since im a big baby when it comes to drinking/eating stuff i dont like, i found a way to make castor oil something that tastes good! I tried mixing a tablespoon with orange juice but could only force down the smallest sip ever and was ready to throw it up! NASTY! So after giving it a little thought, i came up with the perfect wat to take it while also adding in the pinapple! In blender add handful of pinapple chunks, a banana, castor oil (i used only a tablespoon) ice and orange juice. Than blend away! I promise you wont even know the castor oil is in there! Since castor oil is in fact an oil substance, it will seperate from the delicious smoothie if you dont keep stiring it with your straw.

ok so i am the 37 weeker that posted on thursday. I guess everyones body
really is different, I wish I could say that the castor oil worked for me.
I took two tablespoons first and then waited about five hours and finally
went for about an ounce. the only thing that happened to me was diareah. We
go to the dr tomorrow and hopefully we will induce. we have tried
everything from walking around the mall and on the treadmill, having sex,
the castor oil, spicy foods, paking around my 2 year old, nipple
stimulation, doing an exersice video, and my husband is a fireman and we
had to go on a call he thought he would scare it out of me by driving too
fast but nothing. So me and my little one are just really stubborn!!!! Good
luck to anyone else who tries it.

I am between 37 weeks and I have had the most horrible pregnancy
imaginable. I have had 2 antepartum stays for various infections and I have
had every pregnancy issue (morning sickness for the duration of my
pregnancy, low blood pressure, low blood sugar, swelling everywhere, SEVERE
indigestion, you name it). I just took 2 ounces of castor oil 15 minutes
ago and I am praying it helps. I have been 1 cm dilated, 50% effaced, and
at -3 station for over a week. I lost my mucus plug on Sunday, but no
change since then. I have walked/waddled my little swollen feet to death, I
have been taking evening primrose oil, been drinking red raspberry leaf
tea, even been trying nipple stimulation, NOTHING is working. I will let
you all know if the castor oil helps, at this point diarrhea is even
welcome considering my prolonged constipation.

I am 37 weeks and I have tried EVERYTHING to get this kid out. She is my
first and my pregnancy has really taken its toll on my body. I have been in
and out of the hospital my entire pregnancy not to mention the typical
pregnancy issues. I have been using evening primrose oil, drinking red
raspberry tea, tried nipple stimulation, walked for miles, and even tried
accupressure. I have taken 3 tablespoons over the last 3 hours and am going
to continue taking 1 tbsp each hour. My doctor doesn't want to induce labor
in the hospital until I reach 41 weeks, but I know I can't wait that long.
I will let you know if the castor oil works for me, but as of right now
nothing is happening.

I was told by my midwife to take castor oil to induce my labor. I desided
to take it @ 38+2 weeks. I took 2oz with oj and it didn't make me bubblie
noe did it give me diahrea although I did use the bathroom 2 times that
day. Now its 5 days later and still pregnant. I desided to take it again I
took 2 tbl spoons wit a slice of lemon behind it and the rest of the bottle
with ginger tea. I hope it works this time around it gave me contractions
for twelve hrs but no progress. I'll keep you posted I pray it works now

I have 3 children and I am pregnant with my 4th I always seem to go over my
due dates I plan on taking it with this pregnancy if I go over so my first
2 babies I was induced by my doctor and it was probly the worst pain I ever
felt so when I went over my due date with my third I refused to be
medically induced so I took 2 oz of castor oil mixed in pepsi at about 8pm
I was feeling nothing so I went to bed and woke up at 330am with diarriah
and I kept going for about 30 mins once I was all pooped out the
contractions still were there and I gave birth within 2 hours of waking up
I recommend it to anyone who wants to avoid potocin but it will only work
if your body is ready I wouldn't ttry until after your due date also while
taking this drink plenty of water coz u will get dehydrated from the
diarriah
