Pregnancy is the perfect time to "go green" and after the baby is born, creating a healthy environment is the beginning of a healthier life for a lifetime.

When it comes to "going green", there is no better time than during pregnancy or when raising a baby. There are so many ways to help keep the environment cleaner and every positive change made can make a difference to the entire world. Babies bring a lot of new things into the lives of their parents and it's a good time to take a look around at ways to live a healthier, 'greener' life.

As a new baby is welcomed into the world, take time to evaluate the following checklist and create a healthier enviornment for your baby and yourself:

  1. Today, there are many more organic products for babies than ever before. Consider using disposable, biodegradable diapers and wipes that are environmentally friendly. Many of the newer types of diapers are easily flushable. Chorine-free disposables are also an option - these are light-brown diapers which are more comfortable than most. Or, consider hybrid diapers which have disposable biodegradable inserts and reusable outer liners. For a few pennies more, it can make a huge difference to the world.
  2. Breast-feeding is natural and if possible, this is the best nourishment for a newborn. It saves money on formula and helps create a stronger bond. If you are unable to breast-feed for some reason, or you are supplementing breast milk, ensure that any formula used is free of unnecessary additives or chemicals.
  3. Speaking of breast-feeding, what mother eats also gets eventually makes its way to baby too. Breast-feeding mothers should reduce their own intake of foods that are high in fat and sugar, and avoid foods that have been treated with pesticides and chemicals. Also, avoid meats that have been treated with antibiotics and other growth hormones. This is necessary during pregnancy and while breast-feeding. Opt for organic fruits and vegetables, milk, and meat whenever possible and always wash foods thoroughly before eating or cooking them.
  4. If powdered formula is used, always ensure that water is clear and pure. Tap water can be harmful since it can contain lead or other chemicals. Have water tested for about $15 and alleviate potential concerns about its safety. For more information, contact the Environmental Protection Agency at 1.800.426.4791 or visit their website.
  5. Clear the air for baby! Be sure to remove any toxins or chemicals from the nursery and the home. Hairspray, deodorant, paint, cleaning chemicals, and other household products are harmful to babies and adults. But a baby's tiny lungs are still forming and growing so they are especially susceptible to many household products. Air fresheners can even be harmful to babies who breathe the air around them. Using environmentally friendly products should start as soon as pregnancy is confirmed and continue for a lifetime!
  6. Although we assume it goes without saying, unfortunately we are often wrong. Mothers should never smoke during pregnancy, and do not smoke around babies or children. Smoke, including econd-hand smoke, is especially toxic to their tiny lungs and it can cause breathing problems now or later in life. It can also lead to cancer later in life so this is an absolute rule when it comes to creating a greener environment for baby and the entire family.

Going green was never more important than during and after pregnancy. Creating a healthier environment for baby is also a way to create a healthier world. It is only the beginning of teaching children the importance of protecting the environment for a lifetime -- and it is the beginning of a healthier life as they grow!

When it comes to healthy babies, don't leave anything to chance. And that includes ensuring that a healthy environment surrounds them in every way.
