Parents of twin boys tend to choose popular combinations more often than parents of twin girls or mixed sets. Here's an analysis of the 2007 top twin names in the U.S.
What should you name your twins? Many parents think of creative ways to make a set of "matched" names, while others simply choose two unrelated names they like. Of course, some names are always more trendy than others, and the most popular sets of twin names typically contain popular names.
According to the US Social Security Baby Name Index, here are the most popular sets of twin names that were given by parents in 2007.
One of the most notable things about the list is this: parents seem to be more creative when giving twin names to twin girls and to boy-girl twins. How can you tell? The U.S. Social Security Baby Name Index lists the top 102 pairs of twin names in the United States in 2007, and this list does not separate twins by sex. Of these 102 names, 59 of the choices are boy-boy pairs, while only 33 selections are girl-girl pairs, and 10 of the selections of boy-girl pairs. Moreover, in the top ten list of twins names, only two of the pairs were girl-girl names (Ella and Emma, Madison and Morgan) and only one pair was a boy-girl pair (Tyler and Taylor).
Thus, it seems that parents of twin boys are more likely to choose popular names for their two children. In contrast, it seems that parents of twin girls look for more diverse choices. Parents of boy-girl twins seem to be the most diverse of all when they choose names.
A quick browse of the top twin names reveals that the most popular choice for twins remains the matched first letter. All 10 of the top twin name combinations in the US use the same first letter for both names.
One thing that parents don't seem to be doing much is using rhyming names-- a trend that was more popular during the Baby Boom. This is despite the prevalence of trendy names that rhyme. However, parents aren't naming their kids Jayden and Cayden, or Kaylee and Haylee, or Chloe and Zoe. The only rhyming set on the list is Jayden and Jaylen, which is ranked very low on the list of top twin names.
Another trend that no longer is common is giving boy-girl twins male and female versions of the same names. Thus, the list doesn't include Daniel and Danielle, or Nicholas and Nicole, or Michael and Mikayla.
Clearly, some names are more popular in twin combinations than others. For boys, common choices are Jacob, Joseph, William, Joshua, and Ethan. For girls, it's Emma, Emily, Madison, Ella, Olivia, Sophia, Hannah, and Hailey.
