How to Survive the Nine Months

Nine months is a long period of time, and your state of mind will make the difference between enjoying or simply enduring the process.

The nine month duration of a pregnacy is actually quite a long time if you stop to think about it. Maybe it’s better if you don’t think about it too much; because the best way to survive and enjoy the process is to pace yourself and to treasure each little step along the way.

The most important thing to keep in mind throughout the whole process is to find joy in every little detail; after all, you’re only going to have this opportunity a precious few times throughout your lifetime. Enjoying the little things begins from the moment you feel that first pang of nausea or miss that first period; the quickening of your heartbeat as you complete the pregnancy test, or the first time you hear the baby’s heartbeat. Have fun thinking of creative ways to surprise the baby’s father or your friends and family with the news.

After the initial excitement of proclaiming the happy news, all of the doubts, fears, and sickness set in; leaving you an emotional wreck. Especially if this is your first child, you’re bound to worry about everything from the condition of the world as a whole to the size feet the baby is going to have. It is quite normal to experience many fears concerning yourself as well. Common fears include: “Am I going to make a good parent?” “How will this change my body?” “Will I even know how to take care of this fragile little being?” The best way to combat all of your fears, emotions, and hormones is to find ways to distract yourself. You may find some of the following suggestions helpful.

  1. Read about each stage. There are great publications that will guide you through each stage of the pregnancy; highlighting the developement of the baby and what changes to expect. Knowing your symptoms are common will alleviate some of your fears.
  2. Plan a baby shower or have someone do it for you. Normally friends, family, or coworkers will take care of this detail for you. A shower provides a fun opportunity for your to prepare for your child and to gather some needed items.
  3. Pamper yourself. You will experience many insecurities throughout the nine months as you watch your body change out of your control. There is no reason why a pregnant woman can not be as beautiful as everyone else. You may not be able to control your expanding waistline, but you can still wear cute clothes, paint your nails, have a cute hair-cut, and wear makeup. Whatever your normal beauty routine, be sure to maintain it even more diligently while pregnant.
  4. Get lots of exercise. Be sure to ask your doctor before beginning any exercise routine, but try to do as much as you are allowed. This will help you feel better, give you more energy, and prevent excessive weight gain. Certain stretches can also help with back pain, and prepare you for labor.
  5. Prepare for the baby. Especially in the ninth month, this will help you distract yourself. Set-up the baby’s nursery, wash the clothes and bedding, and get everything ready for when you come home from the hospital. Start a memory book that includes your thoughts and feelings as you anticipate the birth. Write a note to your child expressing your excitement.

Having a baby is a precious miracle. Despite all of the discomfort, pain of childbirth and sleepless nights, you will treasure the experience your whole life.
