Fancy rings are the customary gift in England and gold jewelry is the standard in India. Hollywood A-listers started the push present trend in North America and now average Joes are taking their lead. In a babycenter.com poll of more than 32,000 women, 23 percent say their mate gave them jewelry or another keepsake after they gave birth. 25 percent of more than 28,000 women surveyed admitted to wanting jewelry or a keepsake after giving birth. Research done by the J. Walter Thompson ad agency shows that 37 percent of affluent Americans recognize the tradition of the birth gift. Aside from dads, other family members, such as grandparents, are also presenting new moms with gifts. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, there are more than 4 million births in the U.S. each year. This enormous opportunity for profit has promoted several companies to design special lines of jewelry and gifts specifically for push presents as well as creating baby bauble registries.
