Natural alternatives for morning sickness are the safest way for an expectant mother to relieve nausea and vomiting often associated with early pregnancy.

Morning sickness is an uncomfortable condition that often plagues women in the first trimester of pregnancy. Women may feel very nauseous and experience frequent episodes of vomiting. Morning sickness can occur at any time of the day or night and can make it difficult for some women to complete their normal daily routine.

There are natural ways that women can help reduce the severity of the morning sickness they are experiencing that are safe for both the expectant mother and baby.

What Causes Morning Sickness

Morning sickness is the reaction of a woman's body to a surge of hormones related to pregnancy. Feeling nauseous and vomiting are symptoms. Morning sickness is a common occurance and is usually not dangerous unless a woman is unable to keep any food down or becomes dehydrated.

Pre-natal Vitamins May Make Morning Sickness Worse

Some women are unable to handle the high amounts of iron that are in most pre-natal supplements during the beginning of their pregnancy. Some OB/GYNs recommend that women whose pre-natal vitamins make vomiting worse switch to two children's chewable vitamins until the worst of the morning sickness is over and then resume taking pre-natal vitamins. Women who do this should take a separate folic acid suppliment to make sure they are getting enough.

Eat Small Meals More Frequently

Morning sickness is sometimes worse if a woman's blood sugar drops too low. Most women experiencing nausea or vomiting are not able to eat a large meal and should try and eat smaller meals every couple of hours throughout the days.

Add Some Ginger

Consuming small amounts of ginger in the form of ginger ale, ginger tea, ginger cookies or ginger candies has been shown to help relieve morning sickness in pregnant women. Women should be careful not to use this spice excessively however as too much ginger (think eating large quantities all day) may cause uterine contractions.

Try Accupressure

Applying pressure to certain points on the inside of the wrists has been shown to relieve nausea. Women can do this with their fingertips or purchase special bands that they can wear on their wrists throughout the day.

Suck on Candy Just for Pregnant Women

Preggie Pops are candies made from certain herbs and spices that are shown to relieve nausea. These suckers taste good and are completely safe to use in pregnancy since they were created especially for pregnant women.

While there is no way to cure morning sickness completely, using natural methods may help women be able to get through the early part of their pregnancy at a higher level of functioning and feeling a lot less sick.
