Learn techniques to ease the symptoms of morning sickness in the first trimester of pregnancy.
Morning sickness generally is confined to the first trimester of pregnancy for most women. A few unlucky women will experience this symptom throughout the pregnancy. Contrary to what the name implies, morning sickness can strike at any time of the day or night. It may include vomiting or only produce feelings of nausea. There are tips and tricks that can lessen or alleviate morning sickness. Bland FoodsMany women swear by plain crackers when morning sickness strikes. Keeping a package of crackers bedside and eating a few before attempting to get out of the bed in the morning may be all that some women need to avoid morning sickness. Other bland foods such as broths, plain mashed potatoes, pasta, toast and grits may also help to keep morning sickness at bay. It is important to attempt to keep something in the stomach at all times as an empty stomach can induce morning sickness. LiquidsStaying hydrated throughout pregnancy is important but it is especially so when morning sickness strikes. Dehydration can lead to preterm labor or miscarriage. Sipping on liquids rather than gulping can be easier on the stomach. Also avoid any caffeinated or overly sweet beverages. Check with the doctor before using any herbal teas or drinks as some may not be safe for pregnancy. SmellsAn increased sense of smell is one of the first symptoms many pregnant women report. This increased sense can also lead to nausea. Avoid restaurants or other locations where strong smells may be present. This may also include not cooking or being near the kitchen during the early weeks of pregnancy. Staying away from people wearing strong perfumes or who are smoking can also help. Some women will find that the smell of peppermint or sucking on a peppermint candy will calm the feeling of nausea. AcupressureThere are certain pressure points in the wrist that can help to decrease nausea. By wearing bands on the wrists that are typically used for motion sickness, nausea may be lessened. These bands can be bought over-the-counter at most pharmacies. PrescriptionsIf morning sickness is severe, the doctor can prescribe several different medications that can lessen or eliminate this symptom. Some maternity stores also sell candies that are supposed to alleviate the feelings of nausea. Do not take any over-the-counter or prescription medicines during pregnancy without first clearing it with the doctor. While morning sickness is certainly not a pleasant symptom, some find comfort in it as they believe it is triggered by the increasing hormone levels related to the pregnancy and indicates a healthy pregnancy. However, it should be noted that many women who have healthy pregnancies never had a minute of morning sickness during their pregnancy.
