InJoy Birth & Parenting Videos has produced an award winning video, The Stages of Labor, that has become a popular choice with hospitals, childbirth educators, doulas and other birth professionals because of the detailed, concise information about the different stages of labor and what to expect physically and emotionally during each stage. Now in its second edition, Stages of Labor is more user friendly than ever.
This introductory section of Stages of Labor video will be helpful for demonstrating to expecting parents what happens to the body physically during pregnancy, and the computer animation graphics are fabulous. The 3-D model is easy to see and highlights the important anatomy of pregnancy including the uterus, cervix, vagina or birth canal, placenta, umbilical cord and amniotic sac.
This helpful section of Stages of Labor not only highlights what parents can except as the body prepares for a normal labor process but also includes pre-term labor warnings including when to call your care provider. Some of the signs of impending labor mentioned in the video include lightening or engagement, release of the mucous plug, nesting instinct, and other pre-labor signs. Stages of Labor does a great job of alternating computer animation with interviews and video highlights of several couples.
The onset of labor is an exciting time that the video discusses with a computer animation showing the complete overview of labor and the birthing process as well as the signs that you may be in labor. Breaking of the water is discussed as well as tips for when to call your health care provider if your water breaks. One favorite part for the author was how well the cardinal movements of the baby were shown in the computer animation.
Each of the three phases of first stage labor are shown in the Stages of Labor with tips for ways couples can handle each phase, tips on what to expect emotionally and physical changes that occur during the first stage of labor. Several coping techniques are shown throughout the video clips of the pregnant couples including walking, sleeping/resting, rocking in a chair, using a birth ball both at home and the hospital, warm bath at the hospital and several more. For each stage the emotion changes are clearly shown as well giving childbirth educators a great opportunity for starting discussions.
Stages of Labor shows more than one birth during the second stage labor portion and allows childbirth educators, doulas, midwives or other birth professionals to show more than one birth in a gentle way and in a short time frame. The computer graphics show what happens physically during the second stage labor and is a nice way to show pregnant couples who might feel uncomfortable watching a birth video first thing.
Again, this is an area where the Stages of Labor computer animation can help show a delicate happening in a non-threatening way while still providing pregnant parents the information they need to understand what will happen.
Overall the Stages of Labor, Second Edition is a great childbirth teaching aid for helping pregnant parents clearly understand each stage of labor both from physical and emotional aspects as well as providing plenty of discussion opportunities in a class situation.
