Top Baby Boy Names in New YorkMichael, Matthew, & Anthony Top NY State Popularity Chart in 2007
Although Jacob dethroned Michael nationwide in the 1990s, it's still holding out strong as the top name in New York. Here are the top 20 boy's names in the Empire State.
The top baby boy names for 2007 are in-- and in New York, Michael and Matthew are on top of the list. According to the U.S. Social Security Baby Name Index, here are the the top 20 choices for little boys in New York in 2007.
Michael has been the top name in New York since the Baby Boom. This is a notable difference between New York and the United States as a whole, where Jacob replaced Michael as the top name in the mid 1990s. This never happened in New York. In fact, Jacob hasn't caught on anywhere near as much in New York as it has elsewhere-- it only ranked at #14 in 2007, and actually fell three points from its #11 position in 2006. Another name that's far more popular in the U.S. as a whole is Ethan, which is currently ranked #3 nationwide but only ranked at #15 in New York. Nationally, there's a good chance that Ethan could overtake Jacob and become the most popular names-- but not in New York. Overall, there wasn't a significant change in New York's top 20 boys list between 2006 and 2007. The top five names remained the same, with just a single switch in places between Anthony (up to #3 in 2007) and Joseph (down to #4 in #2007). In fact, no new names entered the top 20, and no names left it. In the top ten, there was only one change. Alexander dropped from #10 to #11 and was replaced by ultra-trendy Jayden, which jumped all the way from #20 to #8. Other than Jayden, nothing on the top 20 list gained or dropped more than three points. The biggest droppers were Nicholas (#7 in 2006, #10 in 2007), Jacob (#11 in 2006, #14 in 2007), and Andrew (#14 in 2006, #17 in 2007) Although New Yorkers seem to be enamored of some trendy names, like Ryan, Jayden, and Tyler, classic names do a little better in New York than they do nationwide. Perrenial American favorites such as Joseph, Daniel, David, John, Andrew, James, and William all graced the top 20 in 2007. With a large Italian population, Italian favorites such as Anthony and Nicholas also do better in New York than in the rest of the nation. A surprising regional choice in New York in Justin, which ranked at #13 in New York for the second year in a row, but which only ranks #44 nationwide. Another difference is the popularity of Matthew, which is starting to fall somewhat from favor nationwide, but has been the second most popular boy's name in New York since 1996. See also:
