Isabella reigns on the top of the name charts in New York State-- but is Sophia the real queen of popular names? Here are the top 20 girl's names in NY from 2007.
Emily is no longer the top baby girl's name in the state of New York. For the first time, Isabella is on top-- with quickly rising Sophia not far behind. These trends echo what's going on with girls' names in much of the country, and although Emily was still the number one baby girl's name nationwide in 2007, Isabella and Sophia may be catching Emily soon.
According to the U.S. Social Security Baby Name Index, here are the top 20 baby girl names in New York state in 2007.
Although Isabella was on top of the charts, there's actually some question as to whether it was really the top girl's name in New York. Sophia was a close second, but when combined with popular alternate spelling Sofia (#30 on the NY charts), the two names together are actually a little more popular than Isabella. And this is muddied a little further by the popularity of related names Sophie (#54), Isabelle (#80), and Isabel (#85).
At any rate, you'll certainly be finding a lot of Izzys and Bellas and Sophs in Central Park these days.
Despite the "fall" of Emily (which is still #3, of course),t he top 20 baby girl names in New York did not change significantly between 2006 and 2007. No new names entered or fell from the list, and none of the names shifted more than three points in either direction. The top 10 did not gain or lose any names either. The biggest climbers were Sophia (from #5 to #2) and Elizabeth (from #17 to #14). The name that declined the furthest was Grace (from #15 to #18).
Although the top girl's names in New York does not differ greatly with the nation as a whole, there are some interesting regional differences. The most notable difference is the popularity of Gianna, which ranks at #22 in New York (home of a large Italian population) but only ranks at #90 nationwide. Another difference is the popularity of Kayla, a name that was very trendy in the 1990s but has fallen to #26 nationwide. At #13 for the second year in a row, it's still very trendy in New York. The state's large Jewish population may be the reason behind the popularity of Esther (#50 in NY, #280 nationwide) and Chaya (#97 in NY, #761 nationwide). And trendy Addison, which has sped up the charts nationwide to #11 in 2007, has failed to impress New Yorkers as much-- it only ranked at #59, although Madison is hanging in the at #6.
