» Feature Writer Angela England - Childbirth classes - Independant??

I missed the "Independant" option! Of course, those are the classes that I teach so that would have been my vote.

Barring that option I selected Bradley becuase they cover a wide range of topics including lots of nutrition information that is all too often lacking in some hospital based classes.

While not all hospital based classes are like this I've found many hospital childbirth instructors have certain outlines preestablished and cannot teach to the full extant. Even though they WANT to. They have to focus more on hospital policies and regulations rather than nutritional information and labor coping techniques.

Just a couple thoughts. :-)

I chose "none," although I don't mean it obnoxiously. I took Bradley when I was pregnant with my first kid, but after the doc gave me that epidural, nothing mattered.

Then my second kid came out with no pain meds (my au natural baby) BUT I only pushed one and a half times and there was her little self.

I guess my feeling is, women have been having babies for millions of years, so we can let our bodies guide us and everything will come out okay in the end. So to speak!

There are never enough choices on these polls - maybe I should have said Independent instead of Hospital classes.

I just finished my class series this week and both of my couples said they learned so much and felt more confident.

Then we know we are doing our job!

I think there are definately a lot of benefits to childbirth classes.

In our case it helped my husband and I communicate about our expectations of the birth and postpartum time.
Taking the childbirth classes also helped us get a better idea of what to expect in our local area and actually contributed a lot to our decision to pursue a homebirth becuase the main birthing hospital had such high rates of interventions (5% higher than the state wide average and over 10% higher than the national average of Cesarean births as well as over 90% induction rate!!!).

Not to mention the nutritional counseling and labor coping techniques.

I'm definately glad I took classes during my first pregnancy and now I'm in the position to TEACH classes for others! It IS exciting! :-)

We took a hospital class from a wonderful, supportive nurse, and it was a great bonding experience for us. We didn't learn a ton of new information, but picked up some things that were very helpful, so I'm glad we did it. It was nice to meet the other expecting paretns as well. Of course, absolutely nothing can prepare you for what it really feels like!
