» jeanniejean - conception at 48?

I am 48 and my husband is 37. We decided a couple of months ago to stop using contraception and trust to nature and God to see if we were meant to have a child together. (I have 3 healthy children from a previous marriage).

I really would like another child and am now longing for one. I feel and look young for my age and actually thought I was quite fertile.

Over the past few years I have menstruated every month and only had one month where I missed a period (and I put that down to the trauma of a dental op!). Otherwise my period is usually around every 26 or so days, sometimes a little sooner.

So this month we tried to time intercourse around ovulation. I was very optimistic I could have conceived especially as I started to get some symptoms, including nausea and tiredness. I did a couple of early pregnancy tests before my period was due but they were negative.

My period was now due on 21st March i.e. on Wednesday. I carried out a pregnancy test on Thursday and again this morning and both were negative!!!

I have even bought a fertility testing kit to carry out on 3rd day of menstrual cycle and an ovulation testing kit for later on, but if my period doesn't start I can't actually do this.

I have some cramping and feel very tired and emotional.

I am starting to lose hope because of my age. Do you think I am being foolish wanting another child? Is my missed period more probably the start of the menopause?

thank you for any comments or advice.

We do have peri-menopausal symptoms that can creep in at this age so it's hard to rule that out. Could you get pregnant at 48? Sure you could. Just know that your chances are much lower than 20 years ago. But I am also a person of faith, and I truly believe that if you are meant to have another baby, God will make that happen. Think of Sarah! happy

thank you for your encouragement. I also believe that if God wants us to have a child, it will happen, which is why we made the decision to stop using contraception. It is disheartening though to read so many articles and books that suggest that it is either impossible over 45 or the baby will be born with deformities.

Thanks for reminding me of Sarah.

Still no period ....... but another negative pregnancy test too. decided to wait a few days before re-testing.
