HI,I AM 38 1/2 WEEKS PREGNANT WITH MY 5TH CHILD,AND HAVE BEEN TOLD FROM AS EARLY AS 12 WEEKS I COULD BE HAVING A LARGE BABY,ALL PREVIOUS BABIES WERE OVER 9LBS,ALL NATURAL DELIVERIES WITHOUT USING PAIN RELIEF OF ANY KIND.THIS FEAR HAS GROWN WITH MY BUMP,AND AFTER MUCH THOUGHT I DECIDED TO HAVE A PLANNED SECTION.I HAD TO WAIT ALMOST 7 WEEKS JUST TO SEE A CONSULTANT MIDWIFE AND HAVE BEEN MET WITH RESISTANCE FROM BOTH DOCTORS AND MIDWIVES ALIKE.I HAVE BEEN IN PAIN WITH SPD FOR ALMOST HALF OF MY PREGNANCY,AND THIS HAS NEVER BEEN CONFIRMED OR WRITTEN ON MY NOTES,JUST LAUGHED AWAY AS ONE OF THOSE PREGNANCY THINGS.I AM NOW IN SO MUCH PAIN,I CAN STAND FOR ONLY AFEW MINUTES AT A TIME,WALKING ANYWHERE JUST DOESN'T HAPPEN ANYMORE AND I FEEL LIKE I'M LOSING MY MIND AS I'M SURE NO ONE TAKES ME SERIOUSLY,I HAVE SEEN A PHYSIO WHO FITTED ME WITH A TUBI GRIP,THAT WAS GREAT UNTIL I MOVED AND THEN IT ROLLED DOWN,THE NEXT OPTION ARE CRUTCHES WHICH WILL BE DIFFICULT WITH A 2 YEAR OLD TO HANG ON TO .THE CONSULTANT MIDWIFE SAID YESTERDAY THAT THEY DON'T LIKE TO PERFORM SECTIONS ON WOMEN WITH SPD,WHY? SURELY IT MAKES MORE SENSE TO TAKE BABY OUT WITH A SECTION,RATHER THAN DAMAGE YOUR PELVIS FURTHER,ALSO THEY DON'T LIKE DOING SECTIONS ON BIG BABIES,STILL CAN'T WORK THAT ONE OUT,ANYWAY BY NOW I AM SOBBING BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE I'M RUNNING OUT OF TIME AND OPTIONS,(I WOULD HAVE IDEALLY LOVED TO HAVE HAD A WATER BIRTH LIKE I DID WITH MY 2ND BUT AS THERE IS ONLY 1 POOL IN OUR BRAND NEW HOSPITAL,AND THEY WON'T LET ME DELIVER AT HOME(BABY MAY HAVE BIG SHOULDERS)I FEEL THAT THE ONLY OPTION LEFT IS A DRASTIC ONE.)THE MIDWIFE FINALLY AGREES TO REFER ME TO A CONSULTANT,WHO WILL ONLY AGREE WITH WHAT SHE HAS ALREADY TOLD ME,I FEEL LIKE NOW WE'RE WASTING EACH OTHERS TIME AND AFTER MORE PLEADING AND SOBBING SHE REFERS ME TO ANOTHER CONSULTANT WHO WILL SAY YES TO A SECTION IF THATS WHAT I REALLY WANT.I FEEL ANGRY THAT SHE HAD THE POWER TO PLAY GOD AND CAN CHOOSE HOW I FINALLY GIVE BIRTH EVEN THOUGH THIS IS MY BODY AND BABY AND AM QUITE AWARE OF THE RISKS.I HAVE MY CONSULTANT APPOINTMENT NEXT WEDNESDAY 18 APRIL,FINGERS CROSSED IT ALL GOES WELL AS I'M DUE ON THE 21 APRIL ANYWAY.

I am sorry that you are having so much stress about this pregnancy. Perhaps in addition to talking to your midwife and medical consultants, you should also talk to a therapist before your go into labor or have the baby. Or at least a good friend who can offer a listening ear.
I am not familiar with the acronym SPD?? Could you explain? One thing to remember is that even is this is a big baby, your body has a "memory" of birth so to speak and may easily be able to handle another big baby. Do you have other options for pain relief during labor since you can't use a tub? What about a birth ball? Or the shower? Can you use a doula to help you with positions and massage?
Hang in there! Let me know if I can help you.

Chiropractic care is also another way to address pain and pelvic inbalance issues.....if you've never seen a chiropractor it really helped me.

I hope you are able to reconcile the increased risks that come with a Cesarean surgery with what is going on with your body right now and make the best health care decision!

Hang in there momma! Angela

Thanks Brenda for replying.SPD stands for symphysis pubis dysfunction,i have already spoken to my midwife and get the same response each time, she doesn't acknowledge spd, just laughs it off as one of those pregnancy things.i cannot change who i see as she is the only midwife who seems to work there.I was jokingly told to bribe the midwife by a doctor to get a section,so again not taken seriously there either,as for seeing a therapist, time is running out i now only have 4 days until i'm due, this is because my appointment took ages (7 weeks)to come through as the consultant midwife i had to see last week to get things started, only works one day a month at my local hospital.I have read that women with spd should not have an epidural as they won't be able to know how strong they are pushing so could damage their pelvis even more,i have pain in all my joints, even my fingers and toes,so cannot see how any position would be comfortable for any length of time, the sad part is if i could have had a water birth i would be over the moon,my largest baby was born in the pool and it was amazing, but even though my hospital is only 4 years old it only has 1 birthing pool, which is just crazy.I am not allowed to take in my own for health and safety reasons,so this is why i now want a section ,all my options have been met by a brick wall, and although i am not looking forward to a section, i feel even though i will be in pain afterwards it is still the best option to go with.will let you know if i get my section or not, cheers,Kirsty.

hi Brenda,I am now the very proud but exhausted mom to baby Solomon,he was due on the 21st April and i had at last been given the 26th April to deliver by elective section,at an appointment on the 25th to discuss what happens during a cs I mentioned to the midwife that all I ever wanted was a waterbirth, but didn't want to take the risk that on the day it was already in use.she said that if it was free and she okayed it with my consultant how would I like my waters broken today and see what happens? We agreed to it and at 1.30 pm my waters were broken,at 3.30pm i got into the pool at 4cms dilated and at just gone 4pm my long awaited son was born.It was a magical experience, all the pelvic pain and pressure in that area vanished and I could get on with pushing my son out into the world with no pain relief whatsoever. He weighed in at 9lbs 5 1/2 oz,a good size but no where near to what i'd been scared into beleiving he'd be.I did tear (my biggest fear)but it was only a small one which they think happened as his hand was up at his face as he was born,so I again refused stitches, and so far so good 4 days on i'm not as sore or swollen as with my other babies,i was up and about the day after, and the breastfeeding is going very well,he is a beautiful boy.Looking back I am so glad that midwife listened to us at that appointment and was prepared to go that extra bit and get us the birth we had only dreamed of.
