» pruth - cervix thinning

Hi,
I am rigt now 39.2 week pregenantand baby is around 7.2lbs and having some contraction but not regularly, my Dr says still my cervix is not rippen. is there any way to make it thin so i don't need to be induce labor.

I am kind of worried about artificial induction or c-section.

Hi,
I am 40 weeks, 3 days, and had an appointment with my doctor today. My cervix is 50% effaced (thinned) and 1 cm, but has been for 3 weeks now. She suggested that I buy a yoga / exercise ball for the house. Straddle it and sway back and forth while watching TV or relaxing at home. It may help the baby drop further down, thereby thin the cervix more. It will also help with labor pains when they arrive! We went to KMart and bought the ball this afternoon - only cost $12.99.
Good luck! - Amanda
PS - We had an ultrasound today, which showed good fluid level and good placenta size. So, my Dr. isn't going to consider inducing until both those things change. Hopefully yours won't rush to induce you either.

You can try evening primrose oil and love-making since both can help to ripen your cervix. Also keep in mind that your due date alone should not be the only reason for induction. Perhaps your care provider would allow you another week to ten days while you try some naturally inducing methods and/or simply wait for the baby to come when he/she is ready!

You still have some time! I can't tell you how many moms I know who finally "give up" and let go of trying to go into labor and their labor starts! I would recommend that happy

37 weeks is not a safe time to be inducing your own labor. The baby's lungs are not typically mature until 38 weeks, not to mention most women's bodies are not ready as well.

Great encouragement Brenda. You're right that babies will come when they are ready.

In fact - recent research suggests it is actually a hormone produced in the baby's brain that triggers labor receptors in the mother so really - the old saying "Baby will come when he's ready" is actually right on the dot!

Premature births have SO MANY risks and complications as well of long-lasting problems that women should heave a huge sigh of relief when they reach week 40 and then smile and enjoy their last few days. :-)

I suggest to all my students that they give themselves some extra pampering the last couple weeks. A pregnancy massage is great way to treat yourself at week 39. And a pedicure when you hit the big 4-0 is an awesome way to reward yourself for your patience! :-)

Plus I always like my toes to look good when the midwife comes. :-D
