» stewartbaby2 - Fast Labor

I gave birth to my first child in 2005 my labor lasted 3 hours. I pregnant with my second child my doctor wants to break my water at 39 weeks if I continue to have a normal pregnancy. My first child was a week late and I afraid if I go along with breaking my water it will be too soon and end up in labor for 20 hours but if I don't I scared I will not make it to the hospital in time? Please any advice!

Several things to keep in mind is the condition of your cervix when/if your doctor breaks your water. If your cervix is not ripe (closed and not effaced) you could in fact have a long labor this time.

Another thing to keep in mind is that if you go into labor spontaneously again, it could be even shorter. How far do you live from the hospital? You will need to be on your toes and ready to go as soon as you get regular contractions. I have one client who had this very scenario (3 hr labor with first and dr wanted to induce her with 2nd) She refused and instead kept her hospital bags in the car and really paid attention to any signs of labor. She got to the hospital after an hour of contractions and had the baby about an hour later and was thrilled with her decision and how things turned out!
