Dear Brenda.

I am responding to the reason for the high cesarean rates. It was mentioned on this site that consumers may be causing some of the problem. However, since 2002 and perhaps before, the reason women across the country are not opting for VBACs is because many of the medical providers and hospitals are not offering VBACs any longer. Please refer to www.Metroland.net, "Cesarean Nation" June 6, 2002 article to learn more about the reasons. Unfortunately, it's only gotten worse as I understand.

Thanks for this GREAT site about pregnancy and childbirth.

In response to VBACs posted by kathrynmora:
I am not blaming consumers exclusively for the high cesarean rates. However ultimately if consumers accept the opinions of their caregivers for unnecessary inductions and elective cesareans without a medical indication, we have to accept at least in part, some of this responsibility.
The reality is that we also do have some consumers who are not as concerned as you and I might be for the alarmingly high cesarean rate. Like most of the changes that happen in birth over history, (like having fathers present at birth) consumers have to step up and demand changes or they will not happen. Mothers need to be concerned enough that they change providers, not go to certain places of birth when there are restrictions placed on them and question medical interventions without an indicated risk or the trend toward high cesarean rates will not change.
